INDUSTRIAL OBTAINING BRICKS COVERED WITH ZEOLITE-BASED GLAZING

Abstract

This paper presents the experimental study performed at a ceramic brick manufacture factory. The objective of the study was to obtain glazed bricks in an industrial kiln, since earlier such glazing had only been obtained in laboratory conditions. All compositions of the glazing were based on zeolite complemented with low-melting additives. First, the batch compositions were prepared to be applied to small samples of dried clay using a polypropylene palette knife, and after that the samples were fired. On the whole, within the frames of this activity, 3 series of experiments were conducted where 25 various compositions were presented. After the "wet" glaze firing, a parallel study of similar batch compositions, but fired in different conditions, was performed. The samples were transported to the laboratory for X-ray analysis to determine structural joints in them. 150 grams of fritted glaze were prepared for the third series of experiment; the glaze, after mixing with PVA adhesive, was applied to air-dried bricks, which in the result gave glazed bricks. The glazed bricks were transmitted to the factory laboratory and tested for freeze-thaw resistance.
