A STUDY OF ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH AND EHS (EHS)-CULTURE EVALUATION AND DEVELOPING IMPROVEMENT PLAN FOR INDUSTRIES THROUGH A TECHNICAL STUDY

Abstract

Building and maintaining a proactive Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) culture at work place is the need of the hour. A Proactive EHS culture in the organization has Proactive impact on productivity, economic & social development and plays a significant role in the long term sustainability of the organization. Unfortunately culture is not an easy concept to understand or manage. An EHS Culture can be measured using advance software on five or ten points scale. A good EHS culture can go a long way in developing World Class EHS culture. In this paper, a concept of EHS culture, how to develop and quantify the EHS Proactive culture and what are the indicators of Proactive safety culture are discussed. The existing EHS Culture has been measured by using advanced software conforming to ILO-Model. Five hundred employees have been interviewed, surveyed and trained in conducting the data for evaluation of EHS culture. Industrial Incidents are invariably caused due to 96 % Unsafe Acts (USAs) and rest is of Unsafe Conditions (USCs) and other natural calamities. There are 9-Categories of Heinrich’s Unsafe Acts and Unsafe Conditions at works. Sincere efforts are being put into practice to improve the EHS culture of M/s JSW Steel Limited and it is ongoing efforts.
