Abstract

Microbes the oldest inhabitants of the earth, versatile and adaptive to the changing environment will be the cost-effective components to combat the present problems in aquaculture. These mini creatures have the novel capability of degrading the nitrogenous and organic matter causing self -pollution of the system and thus maintaining the water quality, to enhance immune system of cultured aquatic animals and to produce bioactive compounds such as vitamins, hormones and enzymes that stimulate growth, thus to decrease the FCR of feed .This paper aims to review the development of scientific concepts of mteroecology and the role and functions of beneficial microorganisms in aquaculture, preventing aquatic pollution thus aiming towards sustainability.
