BIOSORPTION OF IRON (II & III) BY THIOBACILLUS FERROOXIDANS AND ASPERGILLUS NIGER - FUNGI ISOLATED FROM SOIL IN THE VICINITY OF STEEL PLANT
Biosorption of metal ions has been receiving a great attention in the recent years, as the high concentration of toxic metal ions are being constantly poured into the environment, which results in the long lasting bio-hazards in the aquatic eco-systems. The results revealed that there was an increase in Iron (III) uptake by both Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was showed an increase (96.94) and the percentage of removal of Iron(II) was 99.38 .In case of Aspergillus niger the percentage of removal of Iron(III) was 80 and the percentage of Iron (II) removal was 99.62. The % of Iron (II) removal by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Aspergillus niger were 99.82 and 99.62 respectively. It was also observed that maximum sorption capacity for Iron (II/III) by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was more. Acidic medium was preferred.
